Ear wax removal involves getting rid of excessive wax that may accumulate in the ear canal and lead to deafness, impaired hearing or pain.
Ordinarily, people use cotton buds to clear their ears but this can be dangerous when the accumulation is excessive because it can worsen the situation by packing the wax against the eardrum.
The best way involves softening the wax before a gentle wash out takes place. Wax softening liquids include warm olive oil, drops of sodium bicarbonate or wax softeners available in pharmacies. Depending on the softener in use, the process could take between a few minutes to 5 days.
A wash-out involves gently syringing warm water into the ear, leading to the extraction of the wax when the water flows in and out of the canal.
In cases of excessive accumulation, doctors can perform suction surgeries to clear the ears but if this fails they may have to unbung the wax.
